Three Missions of the University

The Moscow International University Ranking is a fundamentally new academic ranking that, for the first time, evaluates all three key university missions: education, science and interaction with society.

The rating uses a number of new criteria calculated on the basis of objective data and excludes subjective reputation surveys. The initiative to create the rating was supported by the leading universities in Russia, China, India, Iran, Turkey, and Japan.

The rating methodology passed a large-scale public discussion in Russia and abroad, in which over 100 universities took part. The rating‘s expert council includes 25 experts from 16 countries. The formation of the rating was initiated by the Russian Union of Rectors in accordance with the instructions of the President of Russia V.V. Putin. The operator of the rating is the Association of Compilers of Ratings, Rankings and Other Performance Evaluations (ACP), whose members are leading rating and research centers.

The project is carried out using a grant from the President of the Russian Federation provided by the Presidential Grants Foundation. The project is supported by Clarivate Analytics, a provider of data and metrics from InCites and the Global Institutional Pro fi les Project (GIPP).

The first draft of the methodology of the Moscow International University Ranking was formed following a large-scale public discussion, which was attended by over 100 organizations - universities, councils of rectors, expert associations and rating agencies. The list of rating criteria was submitted for consideration to the International Expert Rating Council, which includes 25 authoritative specialists in the field of higher education, representing the United States, Great Britain, Brazil, China, India, South Africa, Iran, Italy, Belgium, Turkey, Poland and Russia. After the pilot version of the rating was released in December 2017, consultations with experts continued. As a result of the feedback, some of the ranking indicators were adjusted, and the list of universities participating in the ranking was expanded to 500 universities. In 2019, more than 1,700 universities were included in the short list, in 2020 - over 1,800 universities, representing 110 countries and territories.

Calculation of the rating The total weight of the indicators of the groups is: 45% for the "Education" group, 25% for the "Science" group and 30% for the "University and Society" group. For each indicator, the score of the university was calculated, characterizing its position relative to competitors.
